Walter was a man who didn’t like people. He lived in a tall building just a few floors below it’s highest story. He was that type of guy who wouldn’t hold the elevator door open for a baby.
“Can you hold that for me please”?, a woman asked.
Walter pressed the close door button from the inside of the elevator as he saw a mother and her baby in a stroller within walking distance.
The doors closed from both ends and the last thing Walter noticed was a squint on the babies face like it was about to cry. He had no shame in pressing the button. The only thing he hated more than people was being stuck in an elevator with them and the only thing hated more than that was exercise, which is why he never took the stairs. Climbing up steps was like a marathon for this man, which gives you an idea of how out of shape he was.
On the way to his floor, The elevator came to a stop.
The doors opened and a man and his girlfriend came walking in.
“I’m going up”, Walter told them
“So are we”, the man replied
Walter rolled his eyes, and let out a huff of annoyance.
“Is there a problem”? The guy asked
“Yeah”, “you and your girlfriend are annoying”. Walter replied
The boyfriend began to laugh at the situation.
“Sounds like someones cranky”. The girl said
“Quit talking to me”, Walter responded
The couple didn’t let Walters cruel behavior stop them from talking amongst each other.
“It’s OK”. “I’m tired too”, “I can’t wait to get to bed”. She said
” Yeah I plan on catching up on some sleep”. He told her
“Those finals were killer” she replied.
“Yeah”, ” I’ve barely slept”. He said
“Isn’t it amazing how vivid dreams can be when you’ve hardly slept”. She said
“yeah, it’s almost like being in a coma. He replied
“Have you ever had the feeling of falling off a building”?. She asked
“Yeah, in a dream”, “who hasn’t”? He replied
“Have you ever fallen all the way down”? She replied
“No”, he responded
“They say If you fall all the way down before you wake up”, “you die”, she told him
“So how would you know”? He asked
“You wouldn’t”, she finished
Walter couldn’t explain the goosebumps he felt across his body. The elevator came to a stop and it’s doors opened as the college couple walked out.
Walter let out a sigh of relief. He had the elevator to himself as he went up a few floors before it opened again.
A spanish family was waiting on the outside. Some of the members were heavy set.
“Going up”? The family man asked
“Yes” Walter replied
“Can you make some room”? He asked
“I’d rather not”. Walter responded
“Do you have a problem with our people”? He asked
“No”, “I have a problem with fat people”. “The elevator has a weight limit and I don’t think it’s safe for the children”. Walter replied
“For the children’s sake”, “I’ll wait for the next one”. “And because my family is here I’m not going to beat the fat out of you”. He told him
I wish there was a reason for Walters behavior, but there isn’t. He is who he’s always been. The doors closed and the elevator went up a few stories to Walters floor. He got out of the tight space and walked thru the hallway before he got to his apartment. Once he got to his room, he Sat on his lazy boy and ordered some pizzas. It wasn’t too much longer when he heard
“Knock, Knock”
“LEAVE THEM!”… Walter screamed
“OK”, the pizza man replied
Walter slipped a $20 under the door.
“Do you need some change”? The pizza man asked
“GET OFF MY PROPERTY!” Walter yelled
Walter felt a pain in his arm when he screamed at the pizza man. He didn’t let it stop his cravings. He opened the door and saw no one around. There were no pizzas left The guy delivering them was no where to be found.
Walter rushed thru the hallway in hopes to find his pizza. His pace exceeded his own expectations as he found himself back in the elevator in the blink of an eye. His heart began racing rapidly. Perhaps if he goes down the elevator quick enough, he can retrieve them.
Walter clicked on the first floor, however it was the going up symbol that appeared.
AH! Walter roared
Walters frustration hit an all time high as the elevator continued to go up. He continued to Press the lower level buttons, but it didn’t make a difference. Before he knew it, he was at the tallest point of the building. The doors to the elevator opened and Walter could see a bright light. There was something there but he ignored it and pressed the close door button multiple times to get rid of it. The doors from the elevator closed and the floor he stood on vanished from beneath him as he fell all the way down to the last story.
“Knock, Knock”
“LEAVE THEM!”… Walter screamed
“OK”, the pizza man replied
Walter slipped a $20 under the door.
“Do you need some change”? The pizza man asked
“GET OFF MY PROPERTY!” Walter yelled
Walter felt a pain in his arm when he screamed at the pizza man. He didn’t let it stop his cravings. He opened the door and passed out in front of the pizza guy, who then called for help. The paramedics found signs of life on the way to the hospital, but by the time they got there, Walter didn’t make it.
To be fair, I would die for pizza.

I really enjoyed this, a great little tale. And a very satisfying conclusion. I especially liked how you managed to create such an unlikable character straight off the bat, then delight your readers with his undignified demise. Top marks!

I kind of wanted him to fall off the building but in the end I was fine with him falling at the feet of the pizza man …. Should I feel sad? I don’t.

Indeedy doody he did …. and never did he imagine that he was asking for it, I’ll wager. Things are about to get much better. I’ve had a guest here since I arrived and let’s say its been increasingly stressful. Like nearly 2 months is enough already, am I right? But they leave this weekend and then I really do feel I can get on with my life which, without wishing to sound utterly selfish, is how I like it. Actually, I don’t care if I do sound selfish, it’s how I like it! So I last wrote a piece the week before last – can’t remember if you saw it and I intend to be back riding my creativity pony next week. I can if I will so I will. Hugs to you, sweet fella.

My favorite of yours I’ve read recently. Love the foreshadowing and your simple, terse, matter-of-fact style. It makes your stories easy to read and subtly, but profoundly, impactful.
Also, if you get any time soon, please check out my newest story: https://wordsofhiggy.wordpress.com/2018/06/17/benny-the-chaplain-in-terminal-c/
